3 Tips to Create a Gallery Wall That Suits Your Style

Home Decor, How-To

Stand alone art makes a beautiful addition to your home; a gallery wall makes a statement. Creating your very own gallery wall allows you to get creative and express yourself, but anyone who has ever attempted to create one knows it’s not as simple as it looks. It takes time, effort, and thought to arrange your pieces in a visually appealing way. I want to share some tips with you to make creating your perfect gallery wall a little bit easier.

Curating Your Gallery Wall Pieces

The first step to a gallery wall is finding the right artwork. The most important thing is to look for pieces of art that you really love and that are meaningful to you. It may seem like an obvious step, but if you take the time to find the right pieces, your wall will be rich and personal. When looking for pieces, you’ll want to consider your color scheme. Gallery walls are a mixture of all shapes, sizes, mediums, textures, and orientations but a common color scheme of two to three colors will keep it looking cohesive.

Arranging Your Gallery Wall Pieces

Once you’ve chosen your pieces, it’s important to consider how you will arrange them in the space you have available. There are many templates online that you can follow or you can make your own design. You’ll want to have one or two larger pieces to anchor your wall, but be sure to keep them on opposite sides. Once you’ve chosen your anchors, there are two ways to layout the rest of your wall. The first option is to create templates of each of your pieces using scrap paper and arrange them on your wall using painter’s tape. This allows you to get a feel for how it will really look and rearrange as many times as you want, but it takes awhile to make all the templates. Another option is to lay out your pieces on the floor and arrange them in any configuration that you wish.

When you’re hanging the pieces, be aware of the variations in orientation, size, and shape and use the differences to your advantage. These variations allow you to find balance on your wall. Keep the spacing between the pieces consistent and at least 2 inches apart. Line up the edges of your pieces if possible.

Evolve and Change

The last tip is to evolve. Don’t be afraid to change the configuration, add and subtract, or reframe. Changing one or two things about your gallery wall can change the whole feel of the room, so experiment! Switch it up and add that beautiful mirror you found at a thrift shop or the bold, canvas painting you bought online. It’s your wall so it’s ultimately up to you!
